Welcome to Telford

Telford is a large, modern new town located in the ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. As the largest and most populous settlement in Shropshire, it was designated in the 1960s to regenerate the area and accommodate overspill population from the West Midlands

Key facts

Location: Situated near the eastern boundary of Shropshire, approximately 30 miles northwest of Birmingham.

The birthplace of industry: The Ironbridge Gorge area is internationally recognized as the birthplace of industry. It was here that Abraham Darby I pioneered the smelting of iron using coke in the 18th century.

New Town designation: Originally designated as Dawley New Town in 1963, its area was expanded and renamed Telford in 1968 to accommodate overspill population from Birmingham and to regenerate the declining East Shropshire coalfield.

Modern regeneration: In the 21st century, the town has undergone significant redevelopment. The Southwater complex was completed in 2014, adding a new library, restaurants, cinema, and bowling alley to the town centre
